The Girls
Why did Kay think it was gunfire? She didn't know. It was just the first thing that popped into her head. She can't control those random thoughts, and she couldn't settle down. So, she and her sisters did what they always do when one of them needs to not be alone, they gathered up all their blankets and pillows and camped out on the bedroom floor in front of the box fan. Each of them elaborated on their version of what they thought the popping noise was. They laughed at Kay for assuming the worst, and I flew back to the top of the tree. Sometimes those girls fought like wild animals. And sometimes they needed each other like they needed air to breathe.
