Moving Day
Kay walked through the empty house one last time. The echo of her footsteps bounced off the walls in the dining room. She went to the hallway and ran her fingers across the spot where her Father marked the height of each child every year on their birthday. She wasn't the oldest but she was already five inches taller than her sisters. She wondered if they should have painted that wall. It felt like such a personal thing to leave in the house for strangers to see. She heard the engine of the moving van start-up and headed towards the door. It was time to go. She wondered if you were supposed to lock an empty house when you leave? She decided not to and stood on the porch staring at the moving van. She couldn't imagine how their whole life was fitting inside there.
